Renfrew Collegiate Institute’s Relay for Life Committee has changed the overnight event to a day event.

RCI’s ninth Relay will kick off at noon and finish at midnight on May 22nd. This change will allow for more activities, but more importantly, the committee is hoping that the time change will allow for more community participation, as well as the incorporation and participation of Junior Relayers from the elementary schools.

A personalized logo will also get a change. The new design will feature the Raider’s mascot, a luminary scene and the words, “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back”.

The theme of this year’s Relay is ‘A Journey Through Time’ so teams are encouraged to portray their favourite decade or time period through their costumes.

“It’s an easy theme for teams to express their creativity,” says Devon Barber, the Chair of the event. I expect to see a lot of people dressed up to fit the theme.”

Barber, along with 60 other committee members, are hard at work preparing for the Relay For Life and all the events that lead up to the relay.

The first event will be the annual kick-off assembly and pancake breakfast. It is scheduled for Friday, March 27th. The breakfast is open to all community members from 7-8:30 am as is the kick-off assembly where community members can learn more about the Relay experience.

“Everything you need to know about the event will be explained at the assembly,” Barber said. “Cancer survivors and family members of those who have fought against cancer will also share their inspiring stories. It is very inspirational and it makes you want to do more for the fight against cancer.”

Other planned events include the Bonnie Kerr Memorial Cure for Cancer Carnival on May 8th and a car wash and bake sale at Low’s Square on May 2nd.

These events, along with the actual Relay on May 22nd, will add to RCI’s fundraising total of almost three quarters of a million dollars. It will also bring the school closer to its $1,000,000 goal which the school hopes to reach over the next two years.
